In The New York Times article “Far From the Fires, the Deadly Risks of Smoke Are Intensifying,” journalist Hiroko Tabuchi discusses the air pollution from the current Los Angeles fires that have been raging over the past days. With climate change exacerbating wildfires and making weather conditions increasingly vulnerable to fire, the article discusses how the smoke from these wildfires can seriously endanger communities’ health with the nitrogen oxide, lead, and other materials. Due to the wildfire smoke, the air quality improvement from over the past years is currently being undermined, according to the article.
I read that the wind is expected to pick up this evening, and I already hear it. I truly hope that those who experience grief from these fires find maybe even the slightest comfort in how there are a lot of people who are eager to help each other. Help each other and be there for each other in the hardest of times.
