Reflection:
In The New York Times article “Hit by Wildfire? Here’s How to Deal With Insurers and FEMA.” journalist Christopher Flavelle informs readers on how to more effectively and efficiently receive insurance money after natural disasters. The main pieces of advice include documentation of all the damages to one’s home and taking notes from discussions or interactions with insurance company employees. The article also notes the importance of being fully aware of the options available and when it might be best to make a certain course of action. For example, options include working with a public adjuster or working with an attorney, and hiring an attorney should be more last resort timing-wise while hiring a public adjuster should ideally be done within the initial days of the situation.
I feel really thankful that there are open resources to this kind of information to help those who are struggling with the home insurance process after their homes have been hard-hit by natural disasters. I really appreciated how The New York Times didn’t have the paywall for the information about the wildfires too. Natural disasters can truly happen to anyone, anywhere. This is a learning experience for me. Because who knows what region will be next?
